Booking Through Thursday

When somebody mentions “literature,” what’s the first thing you think of? (Dickens? Tolstoy? Shakespeare?)
Do you read “literature” (however you define it) for pleasure? Or is it something that you read only when you must?

Literature ---- makes me think of my favorite authors such as Willa Cather, Doris Lessing, Jose Saramago or John Irving. I will always explore other works of literature with my most recent "Women in Love" by DH Lawrence. With this book I was almost embarrassed to share with my book club that I just didn't "get it". I also greatly enjoy off the wall books such as "Sanity Matinee" which would never hold a place among the great works of literature. So for me literature is well written and pleasurable!

I didn't 'get' 'Women in Love' either, but I recognised that it was literature by my definition. There is no rule that says you have to like everything that is literature. At least you are willing to try it and see.
