Booking Through Thursday

Do you have “issues” with too much profanity or overly explicit (ahem) “romantic” scenes in books? Or do you take them in stride? Have issues like these ever caused you to close a book? Or do you go looking for more exactly like them? (grin)

I will never forget reading "Gone With The Wind" when I was 14 years old. The sex was quite veiled but the romantic/sexual emotion or tension was quite obvious through my 14 year old lens. Then along came "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck and I was suddenly reading real literature that was sexual. But now 30 years later I realize this emotion (I called sexual at 16) was actually the love, partnership and sacrifice the wife had for her husband. Very good stuff.

As far as overly explicit, we have discussed this in my book group, nothing can be more explicit than our imagination while reading! And, lastly, why would you waste precious reading time to poorly written crap that usually places women in a poor light?

Hi Tami,
Thanks for visiting my Booking through Thursday post and leaving a comment!
I wanted to touch on the exploitation of women, but I was worried I'd go on too long, so I'm glad you mentioned it.

I agree with lesley. Also, I dont' liek to read anything that's poorly written either.

When we were growing up, we had floor vents in our bedrooms. By lifting the grill you could place things that you did not want your parents to see in the horizontal part of the duct work. Safely away from adult eyes, I stashed my illicit copy of James Bond Goldfinger. Hard to match the intensity of that book through the eyes of a 13 year old!

Hi Tami,
Thanks for visiting my site. I'd forgotten the impact of reading those two books. You're so right. These novels had big, powerful relationships between men and women. My daughter read GWTW at about 14 and was very much taken by it. She's had a copy somewhere in her room ever since.
