Booking Through Thursday

When growing up did your family share your love of books? If so, did one person get you into reading? And, do you have any family-oriented memories with books and reading? (Family trips to bookstore, reading the same book as a sibling or parent, etc.)

As this very old brain remembers I rarely remember my family reading (I do remember finding Playboys in my parents' bedroom --- which I avidly read at that time!) I prefer to remember the memories from my children's childhood. All three would only sleep if their father read to them. Our daughter preferred sleeping in her brothers' room until she was maybe eight or nine years old to listen to Patrick read books like "Below the Root" or "The Sword of Shanara". Very very good memories here! And I would be able to let go of the day, clean up the dishes, and then occasionally I would be waiting with a beer or a margarita for him when he finished reading! The payoff is all of our kiddos enjoy reading as adults. Jim Trelease will say this is because their father read to them, however I like to think it was because we never restricted anything they read.

I can relate to finding the Playboys and reading them. LOL My Dad kept them in the cabinet by his recliner.

I will ignore the Playboy part... But I have been reading books recently that I read when I was younger. A Wrinkle in Time, The Giver, The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. I am going to make Tim read to our children.

We started reading to our 3 year old from day 1, and he's been very attached to books for most of his life. Given that he doesn't watch TV, I'm hoping that his love of books remains a life-long love.

Every day ends with a "last book" downstairs, then a "last story" upstairs.

I love that! A last book and a last story! Is the story from a book? What fun for him!

For some reason the book we read upstairs has been called the "last story". I'm not sure how that got to be the case. I love the fact that he loves books.
