Buy a Friend a Book Week is October 1-7 (as well as the first weeks of January, April, and July). During this week, you’re encouraged to buy a friend a book for no good reason. Not for their birthday, not because it’s a holiday, not to cheer them up–just because it’s a book.
What book would you choose to give to a friend and why?
Ahhh, this one is very easy. Since Banned Book Week Starts Tomorrow I would definitely buy a friend a banned book. The banned book would have to be well written. For anyone preparing for a big exam, ie GRE, MCAT, LSAT, Praxis etc it would be "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. I could also purchase "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck (for those of us from Oklahoma) or "The Catcher in the Rye" by JD Salinger (for parents of teenagers) or "A Light in the Attic" by Shel Silverstein (for parents of elementary school aged kiddos) or "The House of Spirits" by Isabelle Allende for us old housewives!
Ahhh, nothing like reading a banned book . . . very fun!

For an adult, I would recommend Huckleberry Finn. Most of us read it in high school, but reading it with the understanding of an adult makes for a whole new experience. One commentary describes it as the first great American novel because it illuminates the two features that made us uniquely American, namely race and space.
I still think of Huck on the raft wrestling with issues of right and wrong and finally coming to the decision that Jim is not just someone's property, he is fully human, even crying for his lost family late at night while drifting down the Mississippi on the raft while he supposes Huck is asleep.
I'm in on the Banned Book celebration and I absolutely love TKAMB. I picked The Catcher in The Rye for my book.
